Homemade Remedies Baby Teething

Your baby may begin to show signs of teething as early as 3 months of age. Most babies will get their first tooth between 4 and 7 months. Teeth usually begin to appear in the bottom middle of the mouth, then the top middle, and then in the back of the mouth. Most children will have all of their primary teeth by 3 years.

Babies start teething anywhere between the age of 6 months and a year, and as any parent can tell you, it can be a rather fraught time. The discomfort of teeth emerging through the gums can leave baby grouchy, bad-tempered, and constantly whiny.

The present study revealed that bottle feeding/nursing at night (98.2%) and using Tlismi necklaces (67%), homeopathic tablets (25.8%), and systemic analgesics (58.2%), and giving raw vegetables to bite on (36.8%) were commonly employed remedies by the parents for relieving teething symptoms (Fig. 2).

Since historical times, the management of teething is comprised of pharmacological and nonpharmacological remedies. Lancing, blistering, applying leeches on gums, and administering opiates and compounds containing lead, mercury, and bromide were some of the barbaric and aggressive remedies used in the past.2

The present study showed that the nonpharmacological treatment modalities included bottle feeding the baby at night (98.2%), giving raw vegetables to babies to bite upon (36.8%), while systemic analgesics (58.2%) were the pharmacological remedies practiced. The use of remedies such as systemic analgesics and feeding the baby at night has also been reported by Owais et al.17 and Kumar et al.6

A significant number of parents had used Tlismi necklaces and homeopathy medicine. These are essentially based on folk remedies and traditional beliefs practiced over the ages. Another reason could be that these treatment modalities are commonly available in the Indian market. Tlismi necklace is a black thread having a single bead containing various metals. The use of copper-containing coins tied around the neck of teething infants has also been reported as a folk remedy by Smittherman et al.18 The copper content is known to relieve the inflammatory mediators associated with teething and could have a role in reducing the body temperature in case of pyrexia.

These ice pops are super easy and naturally sweetened with juicy mango and sweet-tart passion fruit. Popscicle are one of the best natural teething remedies for teething babies and for hiding fresh fruit and veggies from picky eaters.

When a baby is teething, remember that there are some natural remedies you can try first to reduce the discomfort. Gently massage the gums with a small washcloth; this action may help soothe the sore spots while also soaking up any excess drool. Children may also feel better if they gnaw on chilled, but not frozen, teething rings or safe toys made of rubber, unpainted wood or cotton terrycloth. Some parents allow their children to chew on teething biscuits (beware, some of these can be messy), frozen waffles or cool firm slices of fruit. Just be sure your child is sitting up while eating and under adult supervision at all times to avoid choking. Finally, you can also try other drug-free methods of making your child feel better, such as rocking, holding, singing, offering a pacifier, or distracting him with a toy.

If you're looking for a product to help with more significant discomfort, over-the-counter pain relievers such as acetaminophen or ibuprofen given in the appropriate dose for a child's weight can take the edge off of teething pain. It is a good idea to talk with your baby's doctor before using numbing gels or homeopathic remedies. Numbing products are best used by putting a small amount only on the sore area of the gum. If a baby gets too much, the throat can become numb and it may cause problems with swallowing. Finally, although past generations of parents have used brandy or whiskey to soothe teething pain, no amount of alcohol is thought to be safe for infants so resist any urges you may have to follow in that tradition.

Remember that the symptoms of teething may mimic that of mouth sores or other infections so check with your pediatrician if your baby's pain lasts longer than a few days or if he has other symptoms such as fever, extreme fussiness or poor eating.

If you lack creative genes, you can always resort to store-bought, non-toxic teething toys for your baby. Silicone teething rings and wooden teethers are safe and sturdy teething devices. They also come in a galaxy of charming, cutesy designs.

If your baby has a little trouble with bedtime already, teething will make a exacerbate sleep in a more dramatic way. Work on good independent sleep habits with your baby before teething strikes. That way you'll have a good foundation of sleep to work from if teething does throw an occasional snag into your habits and routines!

Soothing a teething baby can be a difficult task yet, perfecting this skill can help you and your teething baby sleep as much as you both need. Teething symptoms can be incredibly painful for your little one, and your baby may need a lot of care and support during this time.

To soothe your teething baby to sleep at night, try giving them a gum massage or offering a cooling treat. Both of these methods will help to reduce the amount of pain that your baby is feeling, which will then help baby sleep.

You could also try playing white noise to help your baby sleep, as this will distract your child from the pain that they are feeling. These are all great ways to help your teething baby get the sleep they need.

When babies have a set pattern of sleep, their body adjusts to it, and they become sleepy as bedtime approaches. Foregoing sleep training during teething will actually make it harder for your baby to get to sleep in the future.
